Brinding the past and future biobanks under international law and European Union Law

In 2009, the Time Magazine included "biobanks" among the "10 ideas changing the world right now". Sixteen years later, biobanks have kept that promise and have proved to be authentic catalyzers and promoters of change as well as of scientific and technological progress. Nevertheless, in order to prevent law from lagging behind science, it is crucial to rethink the governance of biobanks under
International Law and European Union Law and to adopt novel globally concerted responses. On this premise, this book provides an in-depth study on biobanks, for the purpose of bridging their past and their future by using the innovative narrative of the material and the "informationally projected" corporality. From this perspective, the evolution of the legal regime of the human body is explored, and the
individual and the collective dimension of biobanks is discussed. Subsequently, after exploring the role of biobanks in the context of the globalization of science and research, and of the advent of the era of Artificial Intelligence and the digital reality, a novel governance for biobanks under International Law and European Union Law is theorized.
