Gerhard Werle is Professor of German and International Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure and Contemporary Legal History at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. He completed his doctorate and his habilitation at the University of Heidelberg. He is an Extraordinary Professor at the University of the Western Cape (Cape Town, South Africa), where he is also Director of the South African-German Centre for Development Research and Criminal Justice. He is a Honorary Professor at North-West University of Political Science and Law (Xi?an, China) and has been a visiting professor at various universities worldwide, including Columbia Law School, New York; Kansai University, Osaka; University of Sydney; University of Technology, Sydney; University of Cape Town; and University of the Western Cape, Cape Town. |
His habilitation study (Justiz-Strafrecht und polizeiliche Verbrechensbekämpfung im Dritten Reich, De Gruyter, 1989), which qualified him for a law lectureship, was a thorough investigation into the criminal justice system in the Third Reich. He is the author of the first textbook on international criminal law to be published in German (Völkerstrafrecht, 2003, 2nd edition: 2007, 3rd edition: 2012, 4th edition: 2016), which has been translated into English (1st edition: 2005, 2nd edition: 2009, 3rd edition: 2014), Spanish (1st edition: 2005, 2nd edition: 2011, 3rd edition: forthcoming 2017), Italian (2009), Chinese (2009, 2nd edition: forthcoming 2017), and Russian (2011). Further works on international criminal law, transitional justice and modern legal history have been published widely in many languages. Professor Werle was a member of the Working Group on the Introduction of a Code of Crimes Against International Law established by the German Federal Ministry of Justice and is a member of the Expert Committee of the German Red Cross on International Humanitarian Law. |
